The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

We accidentally found the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory while intentionally getting lost in downtown Key West. What a fantastic accident I must add! Visitors enter through the gift shop and are immersed in a magical world of butterflies. Butterfly jewelry, artwork, clothing, toys, wind chimes, and flags hang throughout the classy store. This is only the beginning!

Now honestly, we are not butterfly enthusiasts. In fact one of us isn’t fond of any thing in the insect class. I won’t name any names here but I’m the one that wanted to be an entomologist when I was a kid.

After paying for our admission, which is typically $12 a person, however we found a coupon and only paid $10.00 each, (yippee for savings!), we were led into a quiet room with butterfly classifications on the wall. Another tiny quiet, laboratory like, room was beyond that. This room is to make sure the butterflies don’t escape the sanctuary. Through the final door we were met by a wonderland of butterflies, birds, waterfalls, and tropical plants!

The conservatory is host to more than fifty butterfly species and hundreds of individual butterflies.

Be careful where you step, there are butterflies everywhere! And don’t forget to look up, they are above your head, next to your feet, in front of your face, seriously, everywhere!!

A pair of squaky flamingos was hanging out near a foot bridge during our visit. Although extremely loud, they were equally entertaining.

Don’t expect to rush through this tour; we spent an hour in the conservatory getting lost in the sights and sounds of the experience. One of us, the creepy-crawly hating one, decided that some insects are pretty cool, even the hitch-hiking kind.

I recommend this experience to anyone visiting Key West. It’s a relaxing way to connect with the nature that we so often forget about in our everyday, busy lifestyles. Check the tourist magazines before visiting. Most had a coupon for the conservatory during our visit. You can also prepurchase your tickets to the Butterfly Conservatory and other Key West tours through TripAdvisor at a discounted rate. Although it’s well worth the visit, who doesn’t love to save a few dollars!?
